We are HEROES &#; Thomas P Lecky

By Kiwayne Jacobs

Jamaica Hope, Jamaica Red, Jamaica Brahman, and Jamaica Black are a few phrases that should come to mind when you hear the name TP Lecky. Born Thomas Lecky in , the brilliant Jamaican scientist revolutionised the Jamaican Dairy Industry through is love for animal husbandry.

Dr Lecky spent his childhood days on a small family farm in the hills of Portland. After completing elementary school, he went on to attend the Jamaica School of Agriculture at Hope, where he developed a passion for agricultural science. His academic career later took him to the McGill University and the University of Toronto in Canada.

In , Dr Lecky returned to Jamaica to work at Hope where at the time, there was an issue with the cattle &#; a mix of early Spanish and British imports from India.

They were resistant to the tick fever disease and could pull the weight of the carts, but they were lacking as producers of milk and quality beef. As a result, it was necessary to produce a new breed of cattle that could produce sufficient amounts of milk and a high standard of beef for consumption; in addition to their strength and immunity

Young T.P. received a merit scholarship to attend the Farm School at Hope Gardens in St. Andrew (now part of the College of Arts and Sciences, CASE, Portland). From an early age T.P. was closely attuned to the challenges of small farming having watched his father lose his banana crop as a result of hurricanes three years in a row. Aware too that many of his friends and family members in Portland suffered from an unbalanced diet, he became particularly interested in cattle, convinced that milk and beef could help satisfy protein needs that were not being met. Thomas Phillip Lecky: The unnamed hero

Chronic short-sightedness is one of our biggest Achilles heels. It is an open secret that our growth and development are being severely retarded by an oversupply of myopic thinkers whose default position is &#;It can&#;t be done,&#; or &#;It will never work.&#;

It is not an exaggeration to say that far too many who have been entrusted with great power and responsibility over many decades have totally failed to embrace and facilitate timely innovation.

Professor Patrick Lumumba, renowned African scholar and director of the Kenya School of Law, in one of his famous public lectures, submitted that if African societies are to be successfully reimagined, given the burden of colonialism, it is absolutely necessary to ask: Whose box is this? Where did it come from? And, why? Translated, he means African peoples have to begin to think differently, unconventionally, and from new perspectives.

I agree.

Here at home we need more leaders to adopt the kind of mindset encouraged by Professor Lumumba. I believe we have the ability to create pathways that are suited to our needs, and are, simultaneously, regionally and globally relevant.
