The Great Jubilee of
A Pope so pious as Clement VIII was certain to have much at heart the worthy celebration of the universal Jubilee, which fell in the year The first preparations were made as early as the beginning of On March 3rd the Pope appointed two Congregations, each composed of twelve Cardinals; the first, of which Santori was president, was to devote itself to the spiritual preparations; the second, presided over by Galli, to the material ones. Orders were issued to all the authorities in the Papal States to provide for the maintenance and security of the roads ; the hospices in Rome received ample subsidies, so that they might get ready to receive the pilgrims. Clement VIII addressed himself to Philip III for a supply of grain from Sicily. The governor of Milan was exhorted to repair the roads and assist the pilgrims. All the Cardinals were to take part in the solemnity. The bulls of May 19th and 21st, , announced the celebration of the Holy Year, its duration and the suspension of all other indulgences. Born at Fano, March, , of a distinguished Florentine family; died at Rome, 5 March, He was elected pope 30 January, , after a stormy conclave graphically described by Ranke (Geschichte der römischen Päpste, 9th ed., II, sqq.). In his youth he made excellent progress in jurisprudence under the direction of his father, an able jurist. Through the stages of consistorial advocate, auditor of the Rota and the Datary, he was advanced in to the dignity of Cardinal-Priest of the Title of St. Pancratius and was made grand penitentiary. He won the friendship of the Hapsburgs by his successful efforts, during a legation to Poland, to obtain the release of the imprisoned Archduke Maximilian, the defeated claimant to the Polish throne. During the conclave of he was the unwilling candidate of the compact minority of cardinals who were determined to deliver the Holy See from the prepotency of Philip II of Spain. His election was gree

Early Life
Ippolito Aldobrandini was born on February 24, , in Fano, Marche. He grew up in the Papal State with a father who worked as a canon lawyer. That fostered his interest in law and led to the young man attending college to also study canon law.
He eventually became an auditor and worked as a judge for the Holy See in the highest court of the time. Known as an administrator, he later came to the Church and was ordained as a priest. Just 12 years later, he was elected as the new pope.
Papal Election
Pope Sixtus V selected the priest as a papal legate and sent him to work in Poland. The Polish people supported him after he helped release a man they believed was the heir to their throne. When Pope Innocent XI passed away, the cardinals held a conclave to elect the next pope. They spent nearly a month before selecting Ippolito. They believed that he would use his legal background to settle disputes and help the Church.
