Introduction

RaniLakshmibai, popularly known as “Rani of Jhashi,” is known in Indian history as a skillful ruler and a loyal patriot. Her indomitable spirit and bravery continue to inspire people around the world. Her real name was Manikarnika Tambe, but we know her in history as “RaniLakshmibai of Jhansi”.

At a tender age, Lakshmibai displayed exceptional courage and determination. She received training in martial arts, horseback riding, and archery, defying traditional gender norms of her time. This prepared her for the challenges she would face as a leader and warrior.

Manikarnika changed the male-dominated culture which believed that woman should be limited to hearth and child. Lakshmibai grew up with a thirst for knowledge and a strong sense of justice.

It was one evening after the rainy season. Outside Bethur, along the road on the banks of the Ganga, three horses were galloping. Two riders were young men and one a girl.


A Brave Girl

When one of the young men overtook her, the little girl galloped her horse faster and overtook him' Was the young man to accept defeat? Of course, he tried to overtake her but his horse stumbled and he fell down.

"O Manoo, I am dead."

When she heard that sorrowful cry, the girl rode back. The young man had been hurt and was bleeding. With difficulty she lifted him and made him sit on her horse. By that time the other rider also joined them. All the three returned to the palace.

When the horse returned without the rider, Baji Rao the Second, the Peshwa of the Mahrata empire, was quite disturbed. Although Moropanth who was with him tried to soothe him, his mind was troubled. When his children returned he breathed a sigh of relief.

Rani Lakshmibai was born as Manikarnika Tambe on November 19, , in a  Marathi Karhade Brahmin family to Moropant Tambe (Father) and Bhagirathi Sapre (Mother). Lakshmibai's mother died when she was four years old. Her father worked for  Peshwa Baji Rao II of Bithoor district. 

Rani Lakshmibai was educated at home and could read and write. She was also trained for shooting, horsemanship, fencing and mallakhamba. She has three horse-- Sarangi, Pavan and Badal.
