Adieu, Baby Tabassum; your ever-puckish charm will be missed
Mumbai: Just 78 but the indefatigable one always, she appeared to have been on the scene for a century: her presence was ubiquitous and to put it mildly, sparky and spunky.
Tabassum, born Kiran Bala, possesses the distinction of hosting the longest-running show – Phool Khile Hain Gulshan -- ’93; the delightful conversations on Doordarshan during the black-and-white era with film celebrities.
So how did she derive the catchy name, Tabassum? Her father was the freedom fighter, Ayodyanath Sachdev, her mother Ashghari Begum. Her screen name, it is lored, was coined by Dilip Kumar, who was extremely fond of the actress, who was called Baby Tabassum. Others claim that it was her mother who equated her daughter with the aphorism, “Be Happy, Keep Smiling.”
Although she had already done her vivacious number in several films of the black-and-white era, it’s the song ‘Bachpan ke dil bhula na dena’ (rendered by Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar), in the thespian’s starrer ‘Deedar’ with Nargis, which endeared her instantaneosuly to the nation – way before the Irani sisters – Daisy and Honey – in a way, replaced her as t

हिंदी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री का मशहूर नाम रहीं तबस्सुम अब इस दुनिया में नहीं हैं. शुक्रवार 18 नवंबर की शाम तबस्सुम का कार्डियक अरेस्ट के चलते निधन हो गया. वो 78 साल की थीं. आजतक.इन से बात करते हुए एक्ट्रेस के बेटे होशांग ने बताया कि शुक्रवार रात पर कार्डियक अरेस्ट की वजह से वो गुजर गईं. मुंबई में 21 नवंबर को उनकी प्रार्थना सभा रखी गई है.

मां-बाप ने रखे थे अलग नाम
तबस्सुम ने अपने फिल्मी करियर की शुरुआत बतौर चाइल्ड आर्टिस्ट की थी. उन्हें बेबी तबस्सुम के नाम से जाना जाता था. उनका जन्म में हुआ था. उनके पिता का नाम आयोध्यानाथ सचदेव था, जो एक स्वतंत्रता सैनानी थे. उनकी मां का नाम असगरी बेगम था. वो भी स्वतंत्रता सैनानी थीं. साथ ही एक पत्रकार और लेखिका भी थीं. तबस्सुम के पिता ने उनकी मां के धर्म को ध्यान में रखते हुए उन्हें तबस्सुम नाम दिया था. वहीं उनकी मां ने उनके पिता के धर्म को ध्यान में रखते हुए उनका नाम किरण बाला रखा था.
बेबी तबस्सुम के रूप में की शुरुआत
में फिल्म 'नरगिस' से बेबी तबस्सुम ने अपने करियर की शुरुआत की थी. इस बाद उन्हें मेरा सुहाग, मंझधार, बड़ी बहन, सरगम, छोटी भाभी और दीदार संग ढेरों फिल्मों में देखा गया. फिल्म 'बैजु बावरा' में उन्होंने मीना कुमारी के बचपन का रोल निभाया था
Actress, entertainer, talk show host Tabassum, whose death anniversary fell on November 18, was ‘Baby Tanassum’ all her life.
She laughed girlishly as she recalled all the fun times. “Because of my long association with television I wasn’t able to become a top heroine. But I’ve no regrets. What would I have achieved as a leading lady? films at the most. And then retirement. But as a TV person look how long I’ve lasted.”

Talking about the difference in film-based talk shows now and during her time when she hosted the legendary Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, Tabassum said, “I never needed to do that much homework because I knew the interviewees well. It’s been more than a hundred years of Indian cinema and I’ve been part of it for 59 years. I was two and a half when I did my first film. I know of no one who started that young. In December, I signed my first film. In terms of my work, I’m more senior than BR Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Lata Mangeshkar. Maze ki baat yeh hai ki abhi bhi Baby Tabassum chala hua hai.”
