Nació en el 27 de julio de en Corea del Sur, durante la colonización japonesa. Su nombre de nacimiento era Choi Young-Li, pero prefería ser llamado Choi Bae-Dal para indicar su procedencia coreana. Masutatsu Oyama was born in in South Korea, then known as Choi Bae-dal. He moved to Japan in his youth and began his career in martial arts.
