Fra Filippo Lippi () was one of the protagonists of the Florence art scene, during the second half of the 15th century. He was the master of Sandro Botticelli, and father of Filippino Lippi, another painter that we meet at the Uffizi.
In the Lives, Vasari tells that Filippo entered the Carmelites monastery, in the Oltrarno district, when he was 8. In Santa Maria del Carmine – the Carmelites’ church – many years later, his son Filippino completed the famous Masaccio’s frescoes of the Cappella Brancacci.
In , Filippo became friar: for this reason in Italian he is called Fra Filippo. During the 30’s he moved from Florence to Padua. According to Vasari, during a short trip by boat, Lippi and some friends have been kidnapped and enslaved by the Moors. One day – after more than a year – Filippo made the portrait of his master on a wall, using a piece of coal. Moors did not know painting: they considered Filippo’s art a miracle, and released him.

Fra Filippo Lippi was perhaps the most important Florentine painter of the second half of the fifteenth century, and one of the great masters of the Early Renaissance. He was an artist of tremendous skill and dexterity who manged to strike a fine balance between the traditions of devotional art and current humanist influences. Notwithstanding a reputation for sexual scandal and eccentric living, he produced intricate religious parables that brought an element of psychological realism to compositions of irregular perspective and fine coloring and detailed ornamentation. Lippi painted Florentine masterpieces such as The Annunciation and the Seven Saints before moving to the cities of Spoleto and Prato where he produced his career defining monumental works, respectively, Stories of St John the Baptist and St Stephen and Scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary.

He was an artist of tremendous skill and dexterity. was born into a large and poor family in Florence, on a side street Ardiglione, in to Tommaso, a butcher, and his wife. Since his mother died soon after his birth and his father died when he was only 2 years old, he was sent to live with his paternal aunt, Mona Lapaccia. As he grew, he eventually became an unruly and headstrong child, and because she was too poor to raise him, Zia Mona sent him (and a brother) to the care of the Carmelite monks at the Santa Maria del Carmine convent.
