Instead of following his superiors' orders, Mr Garang went on to encourage mutinies in other garrisons and set himself at the head of the rebellion against the Khartoum government.

March 9, (SSNA) &#; Late Dr. John Garang de Mabior (June 23, – July 30, ) was a Sudanese politician and leader. From to , he led the Sudan People&#;s Liberation Army during the Second Sudanese Civil War, and following a peace agreement he briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan from July 9, until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30, Late Hero Dr. John is a member of the Dinka ethnic group, Garang was born in Wangulei village in the upper Nile region of South Sudan. An orphan by the age of ten, he had his fees for school paid by a relative, going to schools in Wau and then Rumbek. In he joined the first Sudanese civil war, but because he was so young, the leaders encouraged him and others his age to seek an education. Because of the ongoing fighting, Garang was forced to attend his secondary education in Tanzania. After winning a scholarship, he went on to earn a B.A. in economics in from Grinnell College in Iowa, USA. He was known there for his bookishness. He was offered another scholarship to pursue graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, but chose to return to Tanzania and stud

Birth and Early LifeJohn Garang de Mabior was born in into a humble Christian family of the Dinka Nilotic people in Southern Sudan. Orphaned at the age of 10, he persevered through hardship, completing primary school with the support of relatives.
Military Service and Education
At 17, Garang joined the rebel movement in the First Sudanese Civil War.
