Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

I have translated the Rimas (Poems) of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer from his Obras completas (Complete Works) published by Aguilar in Since it is not possible to copy the rhyme scheme in another language without sacrificing much of the original meaning, I have not tried to make a rhymed translation of Bécquer's poems. I have also translated the "Introduction" from his Obras completas, as well as all of his Legends, his Stories, and "Literary Letters to a Woman." For an interpretation of Bécquer's poetry, the reader may consult my article "The Strange, Gigantic Hymn of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer" (.pdf) and for help in understanding the ideas from his Leyendas the reader may consult my article "Self Realization in the Leyendas of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer" (.pdf).

Who was Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, or Bécquer, as he is also known, was born in Seville in Of French descent (because his parents came from the north of France to Andalusia in the XNUMXth century, he is considered one of the best Spanish poets that there has been in the country .

He was orphaned very young, just 10 years old. He was studying at the Colegio de San Telmo until it was closed. It was then that his godmother, Manuela Monahay welcomed him. She was the one who instilled in him a passion for poetry since, since childhood, reading romantic poets was in his day to day. For this reason, at the age of 12 he was able to write Ode to the death of Don Alberto Lisa.

It was a multidisciplinary person, since at the same time that he st

A tear appeared in her eyes

and I started to say I was sorry;

her pride spoke and her tears dried up,

and the words died on my lips.

Now I go my way, and she goes hers;

but when I think about our shared love,

I still wonder: «Why was I silent that day?»

and she must say: «Why didn&#;t I cry?»

¿Qué os parece?

Rima LIII

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer

The dark swallows will return again

to hang their nests from your balcony,

again will their wings beat softly on your windowpane,

calling playfully.

But those that paused for a moment in their flight

to see your beauty and my happiness,

those that learned to sing our names

they will not return!

Thick clusters of honeysuckle, to your garden will return,

lovelier than ever,

climbing the mud-brick walls, in afternoon,

their perfumed flowers opened full.

But those that were covered with heavy drops of dew,

which we watched tremble and fall,

like daytime tears

they will not return!

Love, again, will return

to sound with burning whispers in your ears;

again, perhaps, will your heart

be roused from languid sleep.

But silent and engrossed and fondly kneeling,

as God before his alter is adored,

as I have loved you dear be not deluded,

love like this will not return!
