Central State president speaks growth fields, mission of higher education

Cynthia Jackson-Hammond's career has been steeped in higher education, and she's spent the last six years at the helm of Central State University as its eighth president.

The historically black university in Greene County has a more than year history of making higher education accessible to all — something Jackson-Hammond is passionate about. The 1,student university has large-scale projects underway to cultivate a bright future for generations, including constructing a $24 million residence hall and adding new academic programs to remain innovative in growing fields.

Earlier this summer, Jackson-Hammond was named to the national board of Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the black college community. CSU is a member-school of the national fund.

CSU had a $64 million revenue for fiscal year and employs nearly people.

Washington, D.C. — Cynthia Jackson-Hammond has been named the new president of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the CHEA Board of Directors announced Thursday.

"I am pleased to serve as president of CHEA and look forward to continuing advocacy of accreditation, member institutions and the work of all recognized accrediting organizations,” Jackson-Hammond stated.

She was elected by a unanimous vote of the CHEA board following an extensive presidential search and will begin on Aug. 1.

"Cynthia Jackson-Hammond stood out among the array of gifted candidates we considered,” said Board Chair Orlando L. Taylor. "She brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience relative to accreditation and quality assurance, as well as a strong background and history in effectively networking and interacting with higher education leaders, governmental officials and legislators.”

Her professional career has included tenured and administrative positions in universities throughout various regions of the United States: University of Louisiana Monroe, California State University Dominguez Hills; Delaware State University; University of North Carolina Charlotte, Winston-Salem State University; and Coppin State University.
