I won first prize and went on stage to collect my trophy. It was so big that my mum had to come on stage to help me carry it. I noticed that she was shaking, but I wasn’t nervous at all. I really enjoyed being on stage and playing music for people.

My parents love to tell the story about how when I was six or seven years old, if it wasn’t a full house, I’d be unhappy and refuse to go on stage.

Under pressure

I did my first three years of education in a regular local school and, when I was 10, I was accepted to study with Professor Lin Yaoji, who was known as the Chinese Galamian (Ivan Galamian was an American violin teacher whose pupils included virtuoso Itzhak Perlman) because so many great Chinese violinists had come from his class.

He had learned in Moscow and was a traditional music professor of the Russian school. It was a great honour to be in his class and it was understood that I would become a professional musician.

The daughter of a car mechanic and an accountant, Tianwa Yang was born on 8 April in China’s capital city of Beijing. Her parents were not musicians nor musically inclined, but still, they thought it was really important for children to learn some music. By pure luck, the only music kindergarten in Beijing was just a short distance away, and since her parents could not afford a piano, it was decided that Tianwa would learn the violin.
