John XII
Born c. , Octavian was the illegitimate son of Alberic II and was just 18 when elected to the papacy as John XII in Seven years later, Otto I helped John recover papal lands from Berengarius II, and John crowned Otto Holy Roman Emperor. However, when Otto proclaimed the Privilegium Ottonianum, which declared that the pope is a vassal of the emperor, John began to plot against him. When Otto came to Rome later that year, John took the treasury to Tivoli, where he hid from the emperor. When John failed to appear at a synod that accused him of misconduct, Otto made Leo VIII pope. In January of , John led a rebellion against Otto and the new pope; John lost. After Otto left Rome the following month, John regained the city and the papal throne. Otto's return ended John's papacy. John died in May, and the cause of his death is attributed variously to a stroke or an outraged husband.
Pope John XII is one of the more controversial popes in the entire history of the Catholic faith. He served as the th pope and was the 12th pope to name himself John.
Born Octavianus, he was was one of the youngest popes ever elected, believed to be around 18 years old when he took up the post. His papacy was characterized by licentious behavior and secular involvement. His actions, ranging from accusations of simony, murder, and perjury to his notorious sexual exploits, earned him a notorious reputation.
He ascended to the papacy in , amidst the tumultuous period of the 10th century, an era often mired in political intrigue and ecclesiastical corruption.
Considered an immoral man with not much interest in ecclesiastical affairs, his actions were not favored by historians or his successors.

John XII was born as Ottaviano in Rome. He was the only child of Alberic II of Spoleto. Alberic II was the ruler of Rome who had deposed his own mother and imprisoned his half brother, former Pope John XI.

The younger Alberic, after the downfall of his mother, Marozia (), was absolute ruler at Rome. Before his death he administered an oath () to the Roman nobles in St. Peter's, that on the next vacancy of the papal chair his only son, Octavius, should be elected pope. After the death of the reigning pontiff, Agapetus II, Octavius, then eighteen years of age, was actually chosen his successor on 16 December, , and took the name of John. The temporal and spiritual authority in Rome were thus again united in one person &#; a coarse, immoral man, whose life was such that the Lateran was spoken of as a brothel, and the moral corruption in Rome became the subject of general odium. War and the chase were more congenial to this pope than church government.
