Christopher Walken began working in the theater in his late teens, and by the early s, he had begun working in film. His breakthrough part came with Woody Allen's Annie Hall (), and he went on to win an Academy Award for his role in 's The Deer Hunter, cultivating a full body of work in the '80s. In , he gained his first Emmy Award nomination for his work on Sarah, Plain and Tall. Walken has taken on a variety of projects that include everything from the Steven Spielberg drama Catch Me If You Can (for which he earned another Oscar nomination) to the music video for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice."

Early Life

Walken was born Ronald Walken on March 31, , in Queens, New York. A performer since the age of 3, Walken started out as a dancer, taking lessons as a child. "It was very typical for people — and I mean working-class people — to send their kids to dancing school. You'd learn ballet, tap, acrobatics, usually, you'd even learn to sing a song," he later explained to Interview magazine.

Walken started out his career occasionally replacing his brother Glenn as Mike Bauer on the daytime soap opera, "The Guiding Light." While in his mid-teens, Walken made his Broadway debut in Archibald MacLeish's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "J.B.," a contemporary take on the Book of Job set in a modern circus. By the middle of the decade, Walken performed in several musicals, including as a member of the chorus in "Baker Street" (). While few chorus players managed to segue into dramatic roles, Walken was an exception when he landed the role of King Philips in the historical drama, "The Lion in Winter," a role from which he was almost fired for being too nervous to perform.

After winning a Drama Desk Award for his performance in "Lemon Sky," Walken had a more significant onscreen part as a young electronics expert opposite Sean Connery in the Sidney Lumet-helmed crime thriller, "The Anderson Tapes." The following year, Walken had his first lead role in "The Happiness Cage," a mad scientist thriller in which he played an obnoxious young man who is used in an experiment that involves removing pain through a brain operation. "I don't need to be made to look evil, I can do that on my own," says actor Christopher Walken. During nearly five decades in show business, the actor has certainly delivered more than his fair share of compelling turns as evil characters and tragic victims haunted by unnameable terrors.

One such was his brilliant depiction of a war-ravaged Vietnam veteran obsessed with playing Russian Roulette in Michael Cimino's film The Deer Hunter which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award.
