Summary of Ivan Aivazovsky
Over half of Ivan Aivazovsky's approximately 6, paintings are maritime subjects and of these the most enduringly powerful are his turbulent seascapes that made him the success of the late Russian Empire. However, as momentum for change grew in late-nineteenth-century Russia, Aivazovsky's technical prowess and prolific output remained tied to his successful formula. His attachment to Romanticism remained especially apparent in his paintings of storm-tossed vessels dwarfed by natural grandeur, while his patriotic attachment to the Russia of old remained apparent in his paintings of naval victories. A younger generation of Russian artists, who engaged more creatively with a changing world, quickly eclipsed Aivazovsky in importance, but the market for his work remains buoyant to this day and his best seascapes still communicate a raw energy.
Accomplishments
- Aivazovsky was one of the last great academicians in the Russian art world, a product of the network of European academies, a Westernizer due to his travels around Europe's artistic capitals, a favorite of the Imperial family, but increasingly out of step with reformers calling for a more socially
Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovsky (Armenian Hovhannes Ayvazian; July 17 (29), , Theodosia - April 19 (May 2), , Theodosia) - the most famous Russian marine painter. The main characters of his paintings are seascapes. Aivazovsky went from being a Feodosia boy who painted on the walls of houses, because there were no pencils or albums in the house, to one of the most famous and successful masters of his time. He was recognized both on the territory of the Russian Empire and abroad. In the heyday of fame, the artist returned to Feodosia and made tremendous efforts to change the beloved city for the better.
Features of the artist Ivan Aivazovsky: the main theme and hero of Aivazovsky’s paintings is the sea, the main genre is the marina. Aivazovsky actively used the technique of glaze, so that the "wave of Aivazovsky" entered the history of art (this is a translucent foaming wave, often found in his paintings). Almost never fundamentally wrote from life, believing that the element can not be depicted, because it is the next moment is different. Aivazovsky wrote easily, quickly and was very fruitful, his legacy - about six thousand paintings.

Who he was
Ivan Aivazovsky was born in Crimea in and became one of the great artists of the 19th century and the most renowned artist of seascapes in history. His deft use of the paintbrush was recognized early in his life and he painted tirelessly, producing around 6, paintings.
Although his primary subject was the sea in all its splendid variation, his works also displayed an affinity for his heritage: a scene of Armenians being baptized, views of Mt. Ararat and a painting of the great Armenian Catholicos Khrimyan Hayrig formed a part of his repertoire. But nothing matched his copious production of paintings that involved the sea, his true love.
His works have been exhibited or currently reside in the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Many of his pieces remain in private collections around the world.
