Haslin Ismail

The potpourri of influences on the artworks of Haslin Ismail is arguably exemplary of the postmodern generation that has come of age in the global village shrunken by technology. The torrent of information enabled by the Internet has enabled a diversity of inspiration. The immediate consequence is a break from the stranglehold on Malaysian art by American Abstract Expressionism, and also a shift away from the single painting.

Haslin’s sources are thus both multi-genre and eclectic, running a spectrum from anime film-maker Hayao Miyazaki with his sibilant impact in the exaggerated limbs of Lost In Wonderland () [fig xxx) to Robert Rauschenberg’s combine paintings and the haunting works of German artist Anselm Kiefer, their influence traced in the increasing complexity of collages and mixed media works such as Take Me Home () [figure xxx].

He is also part of a group of young artists, Sebiji Padi, whose common denominator is an interest in the Surrealist movement of the early 20th century. Haslin’s drawings in this collection can be seen as individual artworks in their own right and serve as bridges towards his mixed media canv

In "Abu and His Companions", the artist tells a story of his cat named Abu and his antics. "His companions" refer to two birds which the artist had observed were exhibiting behaviour of wanting to attack Abu. Merely observing, and occasionally entertaining the behaviour of the birds, the artist explained how an hour later, both birds were found dead.

Treating the birds like his playthings - before he killed them, he toyed with them. In his attempt to capture his amusing and cunning character within this drawing, the artist also highlights Abu's nightly disappearing acts through the dark background and a moon that lights the night sky.

Born in , Haslin Ismail hails from Johor, Malaysia. Having obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts at UITM Malacca in , he then went on to pursue his Bachelors in Fine Art at UITM Selangor. An accomplished artist, he has actively participated in group exhibitions since both locally and internationally.

To date, he has had six solo showcases with his most recent exhibition titled ROT at HOM Art Trans, Kuala Lumpur (). The featured works were based on his experience during a two months residency program called Npo S-AIR in Sapporo, Japan.&

'Transfiguration' by Haslin Ismail

To comprehend Haslin Ismail’s second solo is to look back at last year’s Rimbun Dahan artist residency exhibition in Kuang, where his larger-than-life paintings that delved into the realms of make-believe were the subject of critical acclaim. The Universiti Teknologi MARA graduate’s fascination with sci-fi and fantasy continues in ‘Transfiguration’, which showcases a grand total of 28 watercolour-on-paper efforts and ink drawings.

The psychedelic eponymous piece sees a massive tree coming to life and sprouting limbs in dramatic fashion, which reinforces Haslin’s utilisation of nature and the human anatomy in his artworks. The Terminator-like man-versus-machine paradigm also plays an integral part in ‘Dorsiventrality’, which portrays bones of a human rib cage deftly morphing into cogwheels and bolts. The local talent’s dalliance with a mechanised world may have begun as a homage to Japanese anime ‘Ghost in the Shell’, but his imposing body of work explores themes of love, family, death and existentialism as well. Artist’s statement:

“I call the new body of artworks done at Rimbun Dahan &#;Ghost in the Shell&#;. Taking the same title from the work of Masamune Shirow’s manga and anime adaptation from director Mamoru Oshii, it is an experiment of two main components: the flesh and the machine. The clash between these two elements is highlighted by the creation of robots, machines and human anatomy. They relate to each other and give rise to an expression of function and technology. Visually, both the science fiction and fantasy world that dominate the atmosphere of my artworks present a wide range of routes and exciting explorations. I am a fan of the works of science fiction and fantasy visions such as Jules Verne, HG Wells and the great silent movie &#;Metropolis&#; by Fritz Lang. The amazing world of Osamu Tezuka, the super-galactic Star Wars trilogy, the genius of Hayao Miyazaki and Katsuhiro Otomo and so many more great masterpieces from the great masters of sci-fi and fantasy are my stimulation. When drawing, painting or creating works, I feel as if I am in their world, fighting with monsters on/from planet Mars o
