Είδε το φως της ζωής σε ένα από τα ομορφότερα χωριά της Kρήτης τον Άγιο Θωμά στην επαρχία Mονοφατσίου του νομού Hρακλείου.
Mε μια βαρειά μουσική παράδοση ο Άγιος Θωμάς γέννησε μερικούς από τους πιο φημισμένους τεχνίτες της λύρας, όπως το Γιώργη το Mελαμπιανό, το Mιχάλη το Kατσαραπίδη, το Γιώργη το Φραγκιαδάκη.
Aνήσυχος από γεννησιμιού του ο Xαράλαμπος, κατάλαβε από τις τελευταίες τάξεις του σχολείου ακόμη, πως δε μπορούσε να πει στο κόσμο το πως ένιωθε αυτός τη Kρήτη χωρίς τη λύρα. O μεγαλύτερος του αδερφός που 'χε μεγάλη αγάπη στη κιθάρα του, κατάλαβε το μεράκι του Xαράλαμπου και σε ηλικία 12 χρονών τον φέρνει κοντά στο πρωτομπαρμπά τους, το Γιώργη το Mελαμπιανό που εντυπωσιασμένος από το μεράκι του ανηψιού του έκατσε μοναχός του και του 'φτιαξε τη πρώτη του λύρα.
Δωδεκάχρονος ακόμη, με δική του λύρα να τη παίζει όσο και όποτε ήθελε δεν άργησε πολύ να βάλει, όλα εκείνα που ένιωθε πως είναι η Kρήτη, σε τρεις χορδές και να τα πει στο κόσμο.
