A BIOGRAPHY OF MARTIN LUTHER: WITH BRIEF REFERENCES TO HIS CONTEMPORARIES JAN A. SCHLEBUSCH M.A. Philosophy (UFS); B.A. (Hons) Latin (UFS); B.A. Theology (UFS). Ph.D. Candidate at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, University of Groningen, the Netherlands; Farmer and Rancher. INTRODUCTION Writing a short biographical article on a figure like Martin Luther in the contemporary context of celebrating years of the Reformation this year, is a particularly daunting challenge. It provides a particularly tricky task to produce something valuable for a Protestant audience obviously familiar with the great reformer, a man ranked by Time Magazine in as the 17th most influential human being in history Luther is renowned as the great church reformer, the theologian, the hymnist and Christian philosopher. However, his personal life, i.e. his existence as a man and his self-reflection upon his existence as an object of divine providence in his given historical context is one aspect that has always intrigued me of the great German Reformer. FROBISHER, Sir MARTIN, mariner, privateer, explorer, the first Englishman after the Cabots to seek a northwest passage; b. ?; d.

He was one of five children of Bernard Frobisher and his wife, the daughter of a knightly family named York. When Martin was of an age to be schooled, his widowed mother put him in the care of her brother, Sir John York, then master of the Mint and resident in London. The extant personal papers of Frobisher suggest that he leaned little towards scholarly pursuits, as lad or man; but as Lok says in his account of the first voyage, his uncle perceived him “to be of great spirit and bould courage, and naturall hardnes of body.” In , Sir John sent Martin to Guinea with the Wyndham expedition, in which Sir John had invested; Martin was among the quarter of the expedition who survived, In , he joined another trading expedition to Guinea; on this venture he was detained some months by an African chief as a hostage.

Here is a brief biography of the man who sparked the Reformation.

The Early Years

Martin Luther was born on November 10, in Eisleben, Germany to Margaret and Hans Luder (the original pronunciation).

Hans worked in the mining industry, even owning a few copper mines, but he wanted something better for his son. Martin was sent off to boarding school and then to the University of Erfurt.

He was an excellent student. He soon earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree and seemed to be well on his way to success as a law student. But about a month into his legal studies, on the 2nd of June in , Luther was on his way back to school from his parent’s home when he was caught in a violent thunderstorm. The storm grew more intense and Luther became afraid for his life.

Suddenly, a lightning bolt struck near him, throwing him violently to the ground. Luther
