Summary
Luca Pacioli was an Italian mathematician who published the influential book Summa in giving a summary of all the mathematics known at that time.

Biography

Luca Pacioli's father was Bartolomeo Pacioli, but Pacioli does not appear to have been brought up in his parents house. He lived as a child with the Befolci family in Sansepolcro which was the town of his birth. This town is very much in the centre of Italy about 60 km north of the city of Perugia. As far as Pacioli was concerned, perhaps the most important feature of this small commercial town was the fact that Piero della Francesca had a studio and workshop in there and della Francesca spent quite some time there despite frequent commissions in other towns

Although we know little of Pacioli's early life, the conjecture that he may have received at least a part of his education in the studio of della Francesca in Sansepolcro must at least have a strong chance of being correct. One reason that this seems likely to be true is the extensive knowledge that Pacioli had of the work of Piero della Francesca and Pacioli's writi

The Underlying Structure of Letters: Luca Pacioli’s Alphabet from De Divina Proportione ()

Franciscan friar and mathematician Luca Pacioli wrote several books on mathematics and geometry. Among them, in , Pacioli conceived De Divina Proportione, a treatise in vulgar on mathematical proportions applied to geometry and art with a specific focus on architecture and the human figure. The work was finally published in featuring illustrations by Leonardo da Vinci. Among other topics, De Divina Proportione also deals with the understanding of the composition of the letters of the alphabet with precise xylographic printings depicting their geometric constructions. Pacioli’s aim for harmony in proportional relationships pushed him to apply mathematical rules and geometry to capital letters. All the letters are exclusively composed through straight lines and curves. They&#;re based on the proportion, a system related to a human body whose height corresponds to 9 times the size of the head.

Pacioli dedicates 24 plates to the subject, the first one representing the side profile of the man&#;s head, while the others  23 including the letters from A to Y, including K, X and two

Fra Luca Pacioli () was a Franciscan friar born in Borgo Santo Sepolcro (now Borgo Sansepolcro) in Tuscany. Early in his life he moved to Venezia as a tutor in the house of the merchant Antonio Rompiasi. In his capacity, he accompanied the merchant in his travels and developed significant knowledge in the practice of commercial accounting. In those years he also attended the lecture on commercial mathematics given at the Rialto School by Domenico Bragadin, a mathematician for the Venetian Republic. In Pacioli became a lecturer of mathematics and priest in San Marco.

Fra Pacioli is now best remembered for two very important books: the Summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalita (Venice, ) and the Divina Proportione (Venice, ).

The Summa, as Pacioli himself writes, is not an original work, but rather offers a summary of the state of the art in Renaissance mathematics and stresses the importance of mathematics in a v
