CHAPTER NINE: Locke and Demosthenes

Summary

Graff questions Major Imbu on how the computer program that runs the fantasy game could have put a picture of Peter in the mirror, but the Major tells him that the End of the World portion of the game is new to them all and they do not know how it is operated. The computer could only have gotten a recent photo of Peter from the land computers if it had determined it necessary for Ender’s development. However, why it is necessary is unknown to the Major and possibly even the program; the game is between each individual child and the computer, and its actions could have any number of meanings for Ender himself.

Ender's Game Chapter 9: Locke and Demosthenes

The voices at the chapter's beginning (one of them Graff) are shocked at the fact that the Fantasy Game (or "Mind Game," as the adults call it), which they do not control, automatically pulled a current picture of Peter from Earthside. Apparently, the game knows something about Ender. The voices agree that Peter is dangerous, and are scared of what outcome this may have on Ender.

This chapter returns to Ender's siblings. We know a year has passed because Valentine celebrates Ender's eighth birthday. Peter has become a model student, on the surface, but Valentine sees the splayed and skewered squirrels in the woods behind their home and knows better.

The two begin discussing world politics. There are two major powers in the world united, through a shaky agreement, by the threat of the Buggers. One the one side is the American Hegemony, and on the other is the Russian "New Warsaw Pact." Explanation[edit]

This comic recasts a scene from the novel Ender's Game, written by Orson Scott Card. This is shown in the first two panels depicting the siblings Locke and Demosthenes, as Cueball and the girl, whose real names are Peter and Valentine Wiggin, per the official transcript on xkcd. In the book these two kids write their opinions on their world's version of the internet to gain extreme political influence. Below is a synopsis:

In the book, Ender is an above-average-intelligence boy who is selected to become a potential leader of Earth's "Defense" Forces in the event of another Buggerinvasion (later re-titled the Formic invasions). Meanwhile, Ender's two older siblings, Peter and Valentine decide to save the world from itself. They do this by asserting t

I've been looking forward to this one for months.  Required reading: Randall Munroe on Locke & Demosthenes.  After that, how much is there left to say?  I don't know!  Let's find out.

In today's 15 minutes of Ender Time, Graff is demanding that Major Imbu find out which sothothic horror programmed the video game that keeps psychoanalysing Ender better than anyone else does.  (Although given the apparent level of inductive reasoning among the I.F. brass--hmm, this six-year-old murderer might have violent tendencies--that is not hard.)  Last week, of course, it showed Ender his brother's face in a mirror instead of his own, because symbolism.
