Vadim Stein’s Sculptural Photography

Given his background, it’s not that surprising that Vadim Stein’s photographyhas a sculptural–even monumental–look to it. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Stein studied sculpture restoration. He also worked as an actor and lighting designer, fields which play a significant role in his sculptures, in which carefully chosen lighting helps create the folds and shapes of the the people he photographs, often in staged and dramatic positions.

Of course, “people” may not be the right word to describe the beautiful women, often nude and partially wrapped in stretched out fabrics, that Stein usually photographs. Each of them has a perfect, dancer’s body. Their sinuous forms and muscular shapes can be detected even underneath the cloth that envelops them. There’s a classical perfection in the figurative photography of Vadim Stein. That too is no accident, since classical aesthetics has influenced this philosophical photographer.

Su primera participación en la Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes de Madrid le ha ganado premios en y En los años treinta realizó sus carteles brillantes, con el que ganó el concurso de carteles Círculo de Bellas Artes ballo in maschera en Madrid en y fue elegido para ilustrar la Exposición Internacional de Barcelona en , el mismo año se trasladó a Barcelona como director de arte en la empresa de publicidad J. Walter Thompson. Vadim Stein

Vadim Stein was born in Kiev (Ukraine) in , where he got an education in the sphere of sculpture and restoration. From to he worked in the Theater of Plastic Drama — as an actor and a lighting designer. After leaving the theater he got keen on decorative sculpture and graphics. Then it became necessary to take photos of his own works. It was the beginning.

Now Vadim Stein lives and works in St. Petersburg (Russia), in the city of the white nights and the melancholy people. He is known here as a photographer, sculptor, and stage designer. Now he is trying himself as a videographer. Solving the aesthetic problem, I also reveal many ethical questions. For me, such things as love and death are revealed through the aesthetic category, beauty is the predecessor of ethics.
