Toyo Ito and his 8 iconic works

Toyo Ito is a renowned architect born in in Seoul, South Korea, during the time of Japanese occupation to Japanese parents. He is recognized for his inventive designs and for approaching each project with a new perspective. Ito believed that architecture should cater to both sensory experiences and practical requirements, a viewpoint that undoubtedly enhanced the significant acclaim and popularity his creations garnered.

Toyo Ito moved and was raised in Japan in and completed his architectural degree at Tokyo University. After graduating from the university he started work in the firm of Kiyonori Kikutake & Associates, one of the leaders of the Metabolist school. With the decline of the Metabolist movement, Ito left Kikutake’s firm, and in , he founded his own architectural practice, Urban Robot (URBOT). Later he changed the firm’s name to Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects.

He has been honored with various international awards, such as the 22nd Praemium Imperiale in Honor of Prince Takamatsu in , The Royal Institute of British Architects Royal Gold Medal in , and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 8th Venice Biennale

HOME-FOR-ALL Soma City, a project commissioned for the HOME-FOR-ALL NPO in the aftermath of the devastating Tohoku earthquake, was completed in Summer The Soma City HOME-FOR-ALL offers a safe place where children can play and a community can come together.

The project was funded by donations made through T-Point Japan, generous individual donations, product and material donations - and all professional work was undertaken pro-bono.

Text description provided by the architects. Klein Dytham architecture's Home-for-All project in Soma City, Japan was handed over to the local community on the 14th February with much love.

The Home-for-All initiative was set up within months of the 11th March , Tohoku earthquake and tsunami to build small community centres in the heart of the acres of temporary housing that were built to replace the , homes that were destroyed. 

To date, thanks to incredibly generous donations from Japan and all around the world, several Home-for-All buildings have been built. 

Conceived as a large straw hat held aloft by trees, this building is an indoor play space for children between the ages of . These spaces are important due to the ongoing concerns about background radiation levels. 

As the children cannot play outside, we felt the building should feel like they are playing in a park with trees. The cross laminated timber columns help reduce the span of the timber roof making it lighter

Born in what is now Seoul when Korea was under Japanese rule, Ito's family moved to Japan itself when he was just two years old; he would eventually attend the University of Tokyo, where his prize-winning undergraduate thesis secured him a place in the office of Kiyonori Kikutake, a founder of Metabolism and one of the leading Japanese architects at the time.
