Marcus Garvey Biography

Born in Jamaica, Marcus Garvey was an orator for the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. Garvey advanced a Pan-African philosophy which inspired a global mass movement, known as Garveyism. Garveyism would eventually inspire others, from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari movement.

Social activist Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. was born on August 17, , in St. Ann&#;s Bay, Jamica. He was the youngest of eleven children and he, along with his sister Indiana, were the only children who survived to adulthood. His parents were Marcus Mosiah Garvey Sr, a stone mason, and his mother, a domestic worker and farmer, Sarah Jane Richards. Garvey first gained his love for reading at his father’s expansive library. He attended elementary school in St. Ann’s Bay where he first experienced racism. He became a printers apprentice and left school at the age of fourteen, later moving to the capital of Jamaica, Kingston, where he continued his work as a printer.
