Saint Bede the Venerable was the first great English scholar. He was born in Northumbria (according to tradition, at Monkton, Durham, east of Newcastle) or and died at the monastery of Jarrow on May 25, Almost all that is known of his life is contained in a notice added by himself to his great work Historia ecclesiastica (v, 24), which states that he was placed in the monastery at Wearmouth at the age of seven, that he became deacon in his nineteenth year, and priest in his thirtieth.
He was trained by the abbots Benedict Biscop and Ceolfrid, and probably accompanied the latter to Jarrow in There he spent his life, finding his chief pleasure in being always occupied in learning, teaching, or writing, and zealous in the performance of monastic duties.
His works show that he had at his command all the learning of his time. He was proficient in patristic literature, and quotes from Puny the Younger, Vergil, Lucretius, Ovid, Horace, and other classical writers, but with some disapproval. He knew Greek and a little Hebrew. His Latin is clear and without affectation, and he is a skilful story-teller.

Bede was born near St. Peter and St. Paul monastery at Wearmouth-Jarrow, England. He was sent there when he was three and educated by Abbots Benedict Biscop and Ceolfrid. He became a monk at the monastery, was ordained when thirty, and except for a few brief visits elsewhere, spent all of his life in the monastery, devoting himself to the study of Scripture and to teaching and writing. He is considered one of the most learned men of his time and a major influence on English literature. His writings are a veritable summary of the learning of his time and include commentaries on the Pentateuch and various other books of the Bible, theological and scientific treatises, historical works, and biographies. His best-known work is HISTORIA ECCLESIASTICA, a history of the English Church and people, which he completed in It is an account of Christianity in England up to and is a primary source of early English history. Bede was born during near the English town of Jarrow. His parents sent him at a young age to study at a monastery founded by a Benedictine abbot who would later be canonized in his own right as St. Benedict Biscop. The abbot's extensive library may have sparked an early curiosity in the boy, who would grow up to be a voracious reader and prolific writer.
Later, Bede returned to Jarrow and continued his studies with an abbot named Ceolfrid, who was a companion of St. Benedict Biscop. The abbot and a group of other monks instructed Bede not only in scripture and theology, but also in sacred music, poetry and the Greek language.

Most of what we know of the life of this prolific writer is gleaned from notes in his own writings. Bede entered the Monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul at Jarrow in Northumbria when he was 7 years old, in about AD.
He was given into the care of the abbot by his relatives, perhaps because they were too poor to keep him. From that day he seldom left the monastery, and then only to pay brief visits to friends in the area.
Bede's life was one of prayer and study. He seems to have been a simple man, much loved by his fellows and his students. The prefix "Venerable" was added to his name sometime in the century after his death. Bede was regarded as a saint in the north of England, but his cult never spread to the south.
Bede's master work was his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in This history was commissioned by the Northumbrian king, and it seems clear that Bede had to phrase his writings so as to avoid offending his patron.
