Conocido como Rubén Darío, nació el 18 de enero de en Metapa, Nicaragua. Sus padres fueron Manuel García y Rosa Sarmiento Alemán.
En publicó ya sus primeros poemas en el diario El termómetro. En escribió artículos para el periódico político La Verdad. En optó por una beca para estudiar en Europa, para o que leyó en Managua su poema El libro ante el presidente conservador Joaquín Zavala, pero el liberalismo que revelaba el poema le impedirían conseguir la beca. Sin embargo viajó a El Salvador, donde conoció a Francisco Gavidia, el poeta más destacado de ese país, que influyó notablemente en el determinante sentido de la métrica y la rima en Darío&#; Contenido protegido.
