Human Rights Watch mourns the loss of Karpal Singh, a towering fighter for justice and human rights in Malaysia and in all of Asia.

He died in the early morning of 17 April in an automobile accident as he was travelling between Kuala Lumpur and Penang to attend a court hearing. He was 73 years old.

“Karpal Singh used his keen mind, legal training, and passion for justice to doggedly promote respect for human rights in Malaysia,” said James Ross, legal and policy director at Human Rights Watch. “For decades, he was an unyielding force for the rights of all.”

Known as the “Tiger of Jelutong”, a town he once represented in parliament, Karpal’s tenacity repeatedly landed him in trouble with the authorities. In October , he was detained without trial, along with other opposition lawmakers and political leaders, under the infamous Internal Security Act for allegedly inciting racial dissension. He was released in , and the Internal Security Act has since been revoked.

In , he was denigrated for defending the opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, during his first sodomy trial,

(April 17): As Malaysians recount the colourful life of the late Karpal Singh on the anniversary of his death today, his friends and former colleagues still feel the void left by the absence of this man known to most as the “Tiger of Jelutong”.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the shared laughter, as well as adversities that his father Lim Kit Siang and Karpal faced together, had built an unique and unbreakable relationship between the two – an “iron bond”.

"He told me many times to look after Kit (Siang). He said: 'I would never let them do anything to Kit. I would be there for Kit.' He always reminded me to look after my old man," said Guan Eng.

Guan Eng said Karpal’s former DAP colleagues still occasionally reminisced about the shared experiences they had with the fiery lawyer, who had a softer, playful side when with those closest to him.

"When he laughed, it came from his stomach and sent his whole body rocking. He would laugh until he shed tears,” Guan Eng told The Malaysian Insider.

"When we had nothing to do, we exchanged stories. He would tell me about his experiences in court and politics, and laughed until he had to wipe his tears," he said, f

While speaking out is important, taking action is even better. Vince Tan hopes to see more young tigers drawing inspiration from the Tiger of Jelutong.

Many law students would say they want to be the next Karpal Singh; however, not many actually walk the path taken by the Tiger of Jelutong.

The path he took came with much adversity ranging from imprisonment, defeats in elections, late graduation from law school and objection to his long call to the Bar. All these challenges made him the man that he was &#; and make us realise that we have to face our own challenges in life to realise our true potential.

Tomorrow marks the second year of his passing; yet he still remains a figure of inspiration to many others wanting to walk in the footsteps of the Tiger.
