El pasado viernes 10 de abril falleció en Madrid, víctima del coronavirus, la Dra. Iris M. Zavala, una de las intelectuales puertorriqueñas más conocidas y reconocidas internacionalmente. Nació en Ponce en y cursó su educación primaria y secundaria en San Juan. Hizo estudios de Bachillerato en Artes en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Río Piedras y luego se trasladó a España e ingresó en la Universidad de Salamanca donde obtuvo su Licenciatura y su Doctorado en Filosofía y Letras. Como tesis doctoral presentó en el su estudio Unamuno y su teatro de conciencia que fue publicado posteriormente como libro y premiado por el Instituto de Literatura Puertorriqueña. Abraham Lincoln was born Feb 12, , in a single-room log cabin, Hardin County, Kentucky. His family upbringing was modest; his parents from Virginia were neither wealthy or well known. At an early age, the young Abraham lost his mother, and his father moved away to Indiana. Abraham had to work hard splitting logs and other manual labour. But, he also had a thirst for knowledge and worked very hard to excel in his studies. This led him to become self-trained as a lawyer. He spent eight years working on the Illinois court circuit; his ambition, drive, and capacity for hard work were evident to all around him. Lincoln became respected on the legal circuit and he gained the nickname Honest Abe. He often encouraged neighbours to mediate their own conflicts rather than pursue full legal litigation. Lincoln also had a good sense of humour and was deprecating about his looks.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16thpresident of the United States, serving from to , and is regarded as one of America’s greatest heroes due to his roles in guiding the Union through the Civil War and working to emancipate enslaved people. His eloquent support of democracy and insistence that the Union was worth saving embody the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve. In , he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves across the Confederacy. Lincoln’s rise from humble beginnings to achieving the highest office in the land is a remarkable story, and his death is equally notably. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in , at age 56, as the country was slowly beginning to reunify following the war. Lincoln’s distinctively humane personality and incredible impact on the nation have endowed him with an enduring legacy.
