Leonardo Fibonacci Biography

The Italian mathematician and merchant Leonardo Fibonacci (ca. ca. ), also known as Leonardo of Pisa, was the most original and capable mathematician of the medieval Christian world.

Leonardo Fibonacci was born in Pisa and was brought up in Bougie, Algeria, where his father was a warehouse official. Fibonacci traveled extensively for business and pleasure throughout Europe and in Egypt, Syria, and Greece. During his travels he observed and analyzed the arithmetical systems employed in commerce and learned the Hindu-Arabic numerals. He helped to introduce them into European mathematics.

In the Liber abaci (; revised version ), a thorough treatise on algebraic methods and problems, Fibonacci strongly advocates the use of the new Indian numerals, that is, the nine numerals, plus the zephirum, or symbol for zero. This work can be regarded as symptomatic of the mathematical renaissance of the West. If I simply were to approach Joseph D'Agnese's Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci as solely a narrative and thus on a completely textual and thematic level, I could easily and without any hesitation whatsoever be ranking it with a glowing five stars, as the author not only tells the both interesting and important life story of Leonardo Fibonacci (and as an engaging, approachable first person narrative at that), the information on Fibonacci's math, on his number theories, as well as on his famous "rabbit problem" are depicted, are described in a logical and scientifically sound fashion (and in a way that even mathematical failures like I tend to be can easily understand and retain).

However and all the above having been said, as Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci is a non fiction biography and covers important history, science and mathematical information, I am really and sadly majorly annoyed and disappointed that there are no suggestions for further reading, no bibliographical lists and that even the author's note at the back, while adequate, really should have been a bit more substantial (especially considering how important Fibonacci

While Greek and Egyptian antiquity along with the Age of Enlightenment were known for producing legendary mathematicians, the Middle Ages was also able to produce some of note. Fibonacci is considered by historians to be among the greatest of all mathematicians during that time period. Thanks to his work and effort, the Hindu–Arabic numeral system was able to be spread throughout Europe.

Fibonacci’s Early Years

Fibonacci was born Leonardo Pisano Bigollo sometime in A.D. The exact date of his birth is not known. He was born into privilege as his father was a well- to- do merchant. His father did a great deal of work in North Africa and young Fibonacci would travel with him. The travels exposed the young man to the Hindu–Arabic numeral system that he later brought to Europe.

Not all of the records associated with the life of Fibonacci are clear and accurate. In fact, there is an alternative biography for the man which states that his father was nothing more than a low-level shipping clerk whose name was Bonaccio. Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci

Leonardo Pisano is better known by his nickname Fibonacci. He was the son of Guilielmo and a member of the Bonacci family. Fibonacci himself sometimes used the name Bigollo, which may mean good-for-nothing or a traveller. As stated in [1]:-

Fibonacci was born in Italy but was educated in North Africa where his father, Guilielmo, held a diplomatic post. His father's job was to represent the merchants of the Republic of Pisa who were trading in Bugia, later called Bougie and now called Bejaia. Bejaia is a Mediterranean port in northeastern Algeria. The town lies at the mouth of the Wadi Soummam near Mount Gouraya and Cape Carbon. Fibonacci was taught mathematics in Bugia and travelled widely with his father and recognised the enormous advantages of the mathematical systems used in the countries they visited.
