Lei Feng (18 December – 15 August ) was allegedly a soldier in the People's Liberation Army who was the object of several major propaganda campaigns in China. The most well-known of these campaigns in promoted the slogan, "Follow the examples of Comrade Lei Feng." Lei was portrayed as a model citizen, and the masses were encouraged to emulate his selflessness, modesty, and devotion to Mao Zedong. After Mao's death, state media continued to promote Lei Feng as a model of earnestness and service, and his image still appears in popular forms such as on T-shirts and memorabilia.
The biographic details of Lei Feng's life, and especially his diary, supposedly discovered after his death, are generally believed to be propaganda creations; even the historicity of Lei Feng himself is sometimes questioned. The continuing use of Lei in government propaganda has become a source of cynicism and even derision amongst segments of the Chinese population. Nevertheless, Lei's function as a propaganda icon has survived decades of political change in China.

3 years ago, Dr Feng Shi Lun (pictured) sat in his Beijing flat in despair, desperately trying to work out how he could pass on his knowledge of an ancient Chinese herbal text the Shan Han Lun.
Already in his 70s, Dr Feng is a humble, gentle man. He has spent his whole life studying this ancient work. He was the disciple of renowned doctor Hu Xi Shu, who, before his death a few years before, had the reputation as the one doctor you went to see when nothing else was working.
Dr Hu passed his knowledge on to Dr Feng, but Dr Feng had nobody to carry on the line, and he was worried that the powerful knowledge that he&#;d dedicated his life to learning would die out with him.
But then, everything changed&#;
&#;and it took a small group of foreigners to do it.
You see, in China the mainstream style of Chinese medicine (called &#;TCM&#;) rules the roost. It&#;s the government approved way to do things. If you want to make a name for yourself in the system, you have to work in a TCM hospital, maybe do some TCM research, publish some papers on TCM, that sort of thing.

Cai Lun (Chinese: 蔡伦; courtesy name: Jingzhong (Chinese: 敬仲; ); c. 50–62 – CE), formerly romanized as Ts'ai Lun, was a Chinese eunuch court official of the Eastern Han dynasty. He is traditionally regarded as the inventor of paper and the modern papermaking process. Although early forms of paper had existed since the 3rd century BCE, he occupies a pivotal place in the history of paper due to his addition of pulp via tree bark and hemp ends which resulted in the large-scale manufacture and worldwide spread of paper.
