Elazer Edelman
Elazer R. Edelman is the Edward J. Poitras Professor in Medical Engineering and Science at MIT, where he directs the Institute of Medical Engineering and Science. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a cardiac intensive care unit cardiologist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston.
Edelman received Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and in Applied Biology, a Master of Science Bioelectrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from MIT, and a M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Graduate work with Robert Langer defined the mathematics of regulated drug delivery systems. After internal medicine training and clinical fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at BWH, he was Research Fellow in Pathology at Harvard Medical School with Morris Karnovsky investigating the biology of vascular repair.

Elazer R. Edelman is the Edward J. Poitras Professor in Medical Engineering and Science at MIT, where he directs the Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR), and is the former director of IMES. He is also Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a cardiac intensive care unit cardiologist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston.

Elazer Reuven Edelman, MD, PhD
Dr. Elazer Reuven Edelman is a cardiovascular medicine specialist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS).
He received his medical degree from HMS and PhD from MIT. He completed an internal medicine residency and a cardiology fellowship at BWH. Dr. Edelman is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Edelman’s clinical interests include atherosclerotic arterial disease, how this condition is managed and the mechanisms that lead to unstable coronary syndrome.
The author of peer-reviewed articles, his research combines his scientific and medical training, using a range of engineering, biological and clinical sciences to examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tissue repair. His laboratory helped develop and optimize bare metal and drug-eluting stents, and used device, immune and cell biology to advance studies of endothelial cell and vascular biology. He and his laboratory have pioneered basic findings in vascular biology and the development and assessment of biotechnology.
