BIOGRAPHY
Edmond Rostand was born into a wealthy and cultured Provençal family, so he studied literature, history and philosophy at the Collège Stanislas in Paris, France. When he was twenty years old, he presented his first play, a one-act comedy, Le Gant rouge, at the Cluny Theatre, but it went almost unnoticed. In , he offered a one-act play Pierrot in verse to the director of the Théâtre François. This gave him the opportunity to write for the state theater a three-act play, also in verse, which resulted in Les Románico , a play that was presented on May 21, , becoming a great success and the beginning of his career. of Rostand as a playwright. He cemented his career thanks to his play Cyrano de Bergerac , whose first production ran for more than consecutive nights. Rostand is associated with neo-romanticism and his works are recognized for contrasting with the naturalistic theater popular at the end of the 19th century.

Early life

Edmond Eugène Joseph Alexis Rostand was born on 1st April in Marseilles, the eldest child and only son of a prosperous and cultured family. After a happy childhood and education at the lycée de Marseilles, Edmond moved to Paris to take his baccalaureate and to study for his law degree. But he was determined to be a poet and never practised law. He never returned, except for brief visits, to his native town of Marseilles, but he never lost his love for the warm sun of Provence. Another major influence on the young Edmond was the spa of Bagnères de Luchon, in the Pyrenees. Here as a boy he learned to love nature and the countryside.
