American essayist, poet, and children’s book author, More than once, Elwyn Brooks White pretended ignorance of literary affairs. In fact, when one critic sent him an exhaustive scholarly exegesis of White’s children’s classic, Charlottes Web (), the wry essayist, poet, and novelist replied, “It’s good I did not know what in hell was going on. To have known might well have been catastrophic.”
Actually, there can be little doubt about E. B. White’s literary sophistication. He wrote virtually all his life, breaking into print for the first time in with a prize-winning poem in Womans Home Companion. Eleven years later, at the university, White was elected editor of the Cornell Daily Sun. Having tried a stint at newspaper reporting and advertising, White, in , submitted some short sketches to the newly founded New Yorker magazine.
He joined the staff in , and soon wrote for the magazine full-time, turning out countless pithy, ironical articles, squibs, and observations. Although, over the years, White contributed to other magazines as well, his primary allegiance for almost half

If you’ve read it, you recognize it. The opening line of Charlotte’s Web ranks among my very favorites. Behind the beloved story of best friends Charlotte and Wilbur is the man who created them: EB White. There are so many features of Charlotte’s Web that speak loudly about White’s real life: the pig, the farm, the barn floor, the spider, and a love affair with all of them.
Elwyn Brooks White was born in in Mount Vernon, New York, the youngest of six children. He was a fearful child who did not enjoy school; he preferred the quiet companionship of animals. He kept chicks, lizards, and pigeons as a boy. He began writing very early, both in his daily journal and other endeavors. At the age of nine, White won a prize from Woman’s Home Companion magazine for a poem he wrote.
White struggled with his health as a young boy, especially with allergies. One of the doctors’ proposed treatments was to immerse his head in cold water every morning. As a result of the youngster’s health problems, the White family decided to spend some time in Maine. Every year, for the remaining year
Elwyn Brooks White (July 11, , Mount Vernon, NY – October 1, , North Brooklin, Maine) was a leading American essayist and author of children's literature. As a literary stylist, he championed clear, concise and well-written prose.
A liberal free-thinker, White often wrote as an ironic onlooker, exploring the complexities of modern society, the unique character of urban and rural life, the often baleful influence of technology, and the emerging international system. White was skeptical about organized religion, but held a deep respect for nature and the uncluttered life.
His writing ranged from satire to textbooks and children's fiction. His writers' style guide, The Elements of Style, remains a classic text on concise prose writing; his three children's books, Charlotte's Web,Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan, are among the most widely read and influential children's literary works of the twentieth century.
Charlotte's Web is regarded as the best-selling children's book of all time. It's story of sacrificial love is one of the most heart-wrenching stories in children's literature.
