Bram Stoker was an Irish author, best known today for his Gothic adventure novel Dracula (), spawning the infamous Count Dracula vampire legend from Transylvania.
During his lifetime, Stoker was better known as the personal assistant to the actor Henry Irving and the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London (owned by Henry Irving).

Both his parents were members of the Church of Ireland Parish of Clontarf and attended the church with their children.
Stoker suffered from some unknown illness until the age of seven, after which he started school. Stoker later said referring to this time, I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave the opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years.
